Baltimore’s Powered by ME! Director Michael Gimbel To Testify on Local Youth Anti-Doping Efforts

Washington, DC – Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, announced that Michael Gimbel, Director of Powered by ME!, will testify before the committee today about local efforts in Baltimore to educate middle and high school student athletes about the dangers of human growth hormone (HGH), anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing supplements.

Cummings has long been an advocate of educating area youth about the negative effects of such substances, and helped establish Powered by ME! in Baltimore in 2007. The organization, working with community partners such as St. Joseph Medical Center, has reached more than 30,000 young athletes, coaches, and parents through its anti-doping campaign.

Other witnesses will include: Dick Butkus, NFL Hall of Famer and founder of I Play Clean; Dr. Larry Bowers, Chief Science Officer, U.S. Anti-Doping Agency; Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Principal Deputy Director, National Institutes of Health and Dr. Linn Goldberg, Oregon Health Sciences University.
