Press Release

Washington, D.C. Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s proposal to address college cost and accessibility:

“President Obama’s announced plan to address college affordability marks a significant step toward providing students and families with a more transparent higher education system. A high-quality education opens the door to lifelong success, benefiting not only the students but their families and communities as well.

Congress has an important responsibility to make sure that our children receive greater opportunities to thrive.  I call upon my colleagues to work with me on common-sense proposals that decrease student loan defaults and lower the barriers of college cost.  Taking swift action to examine these issues will promote academic and economic success for our future.”

In 2012, Ranking Member Elijah Cummings examined executive compensation at for-profit colleges as part of his ongoing commitment to ensuring affordability and access to higher education for all. He continues to support and promote common-sense ways to reduce college debt and student loan defaults.
