Cummings Issues Statement After Classified  Briefing on Recent Secret Service Incidents

Washington, D.C. (March 20, 2017)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after receiving a classified briefing about recent security incidents involving the U.S. Secret Service from Department of Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly and Secret Service Acting Director William Callahan:

“I said this during the last Administration, and I will say it during this one too:  I will not rest until the Secret Service is restored to its standing as the most elite protective agency in the world.  There have been multiple security incidents in just the past week, so it is obvious there is still a lot of work to do, and a culture of complacency and mediocrity is not an option.  It is critical that the Oversight Committee conduct a thorough and bipartisan review of these incidents so we can continue to make reforms to ensure the agency is the best in the world.”

On March 10, a man jumped the White House fence and was on the grounds for more than 16 minutes before Secret Service agents discovered his presence. On March 16, a laptop with highly sensitive information about Trump Tower was stolen from a Secret Service agent’s car.
