Cummings Issues Statement on Announcement of  Rep. Trey Gowdy as New Oversight Committee Chairman

Washington, D.C.(June 8, 2017)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement on the announcement that Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) was chosen by the Republican Steering Committee as the new Committee Chairman, subject to final approval by the full GOP conference:

“I offer my sincerest congratulations to Rep. Gowdy on his new role as Chairman of the Oversight Committee.  I look forward to working with him in a constructive and bipartisan manner on an agenda that serves the interests of the American people.  He is our Chairman, and we pledge to support his efforts whenever we can.

"I also want to thank my colleague and friend, Jason Chaffetz, for his service as he enters the next chapter of his life.  He achieved a major accomplishment as Chairman, which is establishing a new and productive working relationship among our Members and staff.  He worked hard to identify and promote work that all Members could support, he initiated our ongoing Russia investigation, and he operated the Committee in a respectful manner even when we disagreed.  And I know that starts at the top.  I thank him for his consideration over these past few years, and I wish him all the best."
