Cummings Issues Statement on Governor Snyder’s Flint Water Task Force Report

Washington, DC (Mar. 23, 2016) – Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to a report issued by Governor Snyder’s Task Force finding that the state of Michigan is “fundamentally accountable” for Flint’s lead-contaminated water crisis:

“This report is a damning indictment of Governor Snyder’s philosophy of running government like a business. The Governor’s lack of leadership and abysmal response to this crisis resulted in an entire generation of children that will suffer from life-long brain damage, learning disabilities, and many other horrible effects of lead poisoning. Governor Snyder put out a barebones plan that was more of a PR stunt than an effort to relieve Flint residents of the day-to-day hardships that are a direct result of his failed policies. Enough with the rhetoric and the stonewalling. Governor Snyder promises to be transparent and accountable, but to this day, he is still refusing to direct 15 of his current and former employees to comply with requests from Congress. Governor Snyder needs to take concrete and immediate action to help Flint families.”

The Task Force concluded that “ultimate accountability for Michigan executive branch decisions rests with the Governor.”
