Press Release

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to news reports that Syria has accepted a Russian proposal to give up chemical weapons:

“The United States should take full advantage of this opportunity to get international monitors into Syria immediately. The elimination of all chemical weapons would ensure greater safety for the Syrian people and enhance our own national security. This approach -- if backed by the full weight of the international community -- could destroy Syria’s stockpiles without the risk of collateral damage. I applaud President Obama for seriously considering this option and for his strong leadership in combating chemical weapons.”

Last week, Cummings commended President Obama’s decision to address the American people this evening regarding a potential strike on Syria.
