Press Release
Proposed Rule Will Help Consumers, Create Jobs, Clean Air, and Increase Energy Independence

Washington, DC ?Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings released the following statement regarding today’s announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about new greenhouse gas emission and fuel economy standards for Model Years 2017 to 2025 vehicles:

“I applaud the EPA and NHTSA for proposing a rule today that will produce a new generation of clean vehicles through reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved fuel use.  The proposed standards will decrease our dependence on foreign oil, improve vehicle value for consumers, improve air quality across our nation, and create jobs.  It is a myth that environmental regulation and a strong economy are incompatible.  The new proposed rule – which is supported by a broad coalition of stakeholders ranging from auto makers to environmentalists to unions – is an excellent example of how regulations can be good for both the environment and the economy.”

On July 29, 2011, the White House announced that it reached an agreement with auto manufacturers, the United Auto Workers, and others regarding greenhouse gas emission and fuel economy standards for Model Year 2017-2025 vehicles.

The agreement follows a similar agreement that led to the national emissions standards set by the EPA on April 1, 2010, for Model Year 2012-2016 vehicles.
