Cummings Presses for HHS and CMS

Subpoena for Withheld Docs On

Decision to Scrub Medicare Website

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 21, 2018)— Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Chairman Trey Gowdy requesting that he issue a subpoena to compel the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to produce documents being withheld regarding the scrubbing of content about the Affordable Care Act from the Medicare.gov website. Cummings previously requested documents concerning HHS' decision to scrub information about breast cancer, preventive services guaranteed by the ACA, and various LGBTQ health issues from the website for the Office of Women's Health.

"The repeated removal of content from Department websites raises serious questions about the Trump Administration's commitment to the health and well-being of the American people, including seniors," Cummings wrote.

If Gowdy decides not to issue this subpoena, Cummings asked that he place this matter on the agenda for the next regularly scheduled business meeting so all Committee Members will have the opportunity to debate and vote on this motion.
