Cummings Urges Gowdy to Subpoena Documents Withheld by State Department on Reports of Political “Cleansing” of Career Employees

July 12, 2018

Washington, D.C. (July 12, 2018)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, wrote a letter asking Chairman Trey Gowdy to issue a subpoena to compel the State Department to produce documents it has been withholding relating to alleged lists being created by a Trump Administration political appointee Mari Stull to determine whether career employees are sufficiently loyal to President Donald Trump.

"The State Department has not responded to our letter and has not provided the documents we requested," Cummings wrote. "In order to conduct oversight of repeated allegations of political cleansing of career employees at the State Department, I ask that you issue a subpoena compelling the State Department to produce the following documents."
