House Republicans Issued More Than 70 Subpoenas and Letters Investigating Hillary Clinton Just Since the FBI's Decision on Emails in July

"Desperate Onslaught of Frivolous Attacks"

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 29, 2016)—Republicans in the House of Representatives have rapidly escalated their investigations of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to unprecedented levels by issuing more than 70 subpoenas and letters just since July 5, when FBI Director James Comey announced publicly that his team of career investigators unanimously concluded that no criminal charges were warranted in the FBI email investigation.

Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, made public the Republican subpoenas and letters and issued the following statement:

"Ever since the FBI Director made his announcement, Republicans have been unloading everything in their arsenal against Secretary Clinton, launching a desperate onslaught of frivolous attacks and trying to do everything in their power to bring down her poll numbers. Based on their own record, House Republicans have focused more on their obsession with bringing down Secretary Clinton than on any other issue facing Congress. This is an outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars for partisan political purposes, particularly when Republicans are ignoring so many pressing issues facing the American people."

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer issued the following statement:

"With their barrage of unwarranted attacks through subpoenas and letters, House Republicans are engaged in a blatant and partisan campaign to discredit Secretary Clinton at the expense of American taxpayers and Congressional resources. Investigation after investigation has found no wrongdoing, and Director Comey made clear that there was no criminal activity. House Republicans' attacks against Secretary Clinton have become an obsession, and they have been dragging the American people along with them on a political witch hunt while ignoring critical challenges that ought to be the focus of Congress's attention instead."

These subpoenas and letters relate to a wide range of investigations conducted by House Republicans against Secretary Clinton over the past three months, including her personal email account, the Clinton Foundation, and a number of other issues. The documents include demands for documents, threats of subpoenas, subpoenas served to attorneys, subpoenas served on witnesses by armed U.S. Marshals, and summons for testimony at numerous hearings.

For example, just since Labor Day, the Oversight Committee has held five days of "emergency" hearings on Hillary Clinton's emails. In that three-week period, Chairman Jason Chaffetz issued 12 subpoenas—which is more than one per day excluding weekends. It is also more than a third of the total number of subpoenas the Chairman issued in all of 2016. The Chairman issued all of these subpoenas unilaterally, without any debate or vote.

The documents include 17 subpoenas and 54 letters issued by more than 200 of the 247 Republican House Members, and they were issued to 12 different federal agencies and 9 individuals outside government. These totals do not include all of the subpoenas and letters issued by Republicans in the United States Senate.

Below are links to the subpoenas and letters relating to Secretary Clinton issued by House Republicans since July 5.
