Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Chairman Darrell E. Issa formally requesting minority witnesses for the Committee’s upcoming hearing on February 15, 2012, to explore proposals for reducing the size of the government.

Below is the full letter:

February 10, 2012

The Honorable Darrell E. Issa
Chairman
Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

I am writing to request two additional witnesses for the Committee’s hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, 2012, entitled “Why Reshuffling Government Agencies Won’t Solve the Federal Government’s Obesity Problem.”  Based on information provided by your staff, I understand this hearing will explore proposals for reducing the size of the government and improving government performance.

First, I am pleased that Senator Mark Warner is willing and able to testify alongside Senator Ron Johnson, who has already been invited to testify.  As the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee’s bipartisan Task Force on Government Performance, Senator Warner will offer valuable expertise and insight on these issues and provide an alternative perspective from Senator Johnson’s testimony.

I also request that you invite Max Stier, the President and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, to testify alongside the other three expert witnesses on the second panel.  The Partnership for Public Service released a report last year called “Making Smart Cuts:  Lessons from the 1990s Budget Front,” which examines lessons learned from government during the 1990s and makes recommendations for what the President and Congress can do to effectively reform government.  Mr. Stier is also willing and able to appear.

Thank you, and I look forward to working with you on this hearing.

                        Sincerely,

                        Elijah E. Cummings
                        Ranking Member
